RULES FOR CONSIGNMENT
Appendix C
31 January 2007

The Thrift Shop’s primary mission is to generate maximum profit through donation sales in order to grant scholarships to individuals and make financial contributions to community organizations. The secondary mission is consignments-a means for military families to generate nominal compensation for recycling of their unneeded goods.

The Thrift Shop is not intended as a clearinghouse site for collections, inheritances or lifelong accumulation of family belongings. When reviewing accounts for non-compliance with the stated purpose of consignments, we use the “reasonable” household standard. For example, in a reasonable household one would expect to find one or two coffee makers, but a dozen or more coffee mugs. Therefore, one would not expect a household to consign numerous coffee makers, but could expect several coffee mugs.

  • Consignors must be valid ID cardholder (active duty and reserve service members, retired from active duty and reserve service members, DOD Civilians and dependents of active duty, reserve and retired service members, 18 years or older.) Card must be shown when making consignments. One account per household will be assigned, with only two people per account, one of which must be the sponsor, unless deceased.

  • The Thrift Shop reserves the right to refuse any item that does not meet the established standards for consignment. Consignment and donation standards differ.

  • Customers may consign not more than 5 clothing and 10 miscellaneous items (or 15 miscellaneous items) on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Total monthly consignments may not exceed 100 items. Consignments may be doubled 90 days prior to PCS, and 120 days prior to ETS or Retirement with orders and these consignors are exempt from the 100 items per month limit.

  • There will be no instances of a consignor establishing a personal resale business or the appearance of a resale business. Such activity might be; withdrawing all unsold items, violating the “reasonable” household standard or consigning items that aren’t from the consignor’s own household. Items purchased at the Thrift Shop from Dollar Bags or the 8 for $1 Sale cannot be consigned. Such activity will revoke consignment privileges permanently.

  • Consignors may not consign large quantities of similar items because it limits other consignors’ ability to bring in those types of items when we add the restriction to the weekly list of what we aren’t taking. This rule ensures equal access to all consignors.

  • Clothing must be clean and spot free. Items which are pulled, torn, pilled, wrinkled, unfresh or has buttons missing, torn seams, broken zippers will not be accepted.
  • Only one article of clothing per hanger is allowed unless it is a matching outfit or suit.

  • Summer clothing is accepted 1 March through 31 July. Winter clothing is accepted 1 September through 31 January. No clothing will be accepted for consignment during February and August.

  • Toys must meet the following qualifications: no dirt, missing pieces or broken items. Small parts must be bagged and clearly marked.
  • Consignors are limited to two unsold pieces of furniture at any time. Large items require same day approval from the Consignment Manager to ensure we have adequate space available.

  • Hard cover books and paperbacks less that 2 years old may be consigned individually. Romances, westerns, etc. must be bundled in sets of two or more like titles and count as one item. Children’s books are sold singly or in bundles. We accept Foreign, Cooking, and Crafts magazines only for consignment.

  • Battery operated items must be tagged with a “working order” verification slip.

  • Computer programs, CDs, tapes, battery operated and electrical appliances must be in working order, and tagged indicating that the appliance is in working condition. Items that do not work, may be returned within seven days accompanied by the sales receipt and “working order” verification slip. The consignor will be required to pay a 10% withdrawal fee for the defective item prior to consigning again. The consignor must set up computers.

  • Electronic consignment items, to include tapes and CDs, will be removed from the Thrift Shop showroom if it fails to meet the standards for consignment. Three instances of consignment removal may result in temporary loss of Thrift Shop consignment privileges..

  • Consignor sets price of items. Thrift Shop receives 25% of total price as commission. The minimum price for any item is $1.25. ($.93 to consignor.)

  • All consignments expire 45 days from the date of consignment. Unclaimed items (on consignment day 46) will become Thrift Shop Merchandise (TSM). Customers wishing to withdraw non-sold items will be charged a 10% withdrawal fee, not to exceed $10.00 per item. Withdrawn items may not be reconsigned for 60 days.

  • Items, which have expired, become TSM and cannot be withdrawn. There will be no exceptions including situations where the shop is unexpectedly closed. (i.e. snow days) We recommend withdrawing items a few days before expiration to avoid problems. Consignors are responsible for keeping track of their items sold or not sold and may receive two complete printouts per month.

  • Prices may not be reduced during consignment period.

  • Information will not be given over phone concerning consignment status, checks or merchandise.

  • Sales in the parking lot are prohibited.

  • Checks for items sold each month will be available on the closest working day following the 10 th of the month. Checks must be picked up and cashed within 90 days of the issue date or will revert to Thrift Shop. Expired checks will not be reissued. A $20.00 fee will be charged to reissue a lost check, as long as that check would not be expired.

  • If you are moving out of area and unable to pick up checks, you must leave three self-addressed stamped envelopes for mailing any payments you may be owed.

  • Items not taken for consignment during a specific time will be listed on a board in the consignment area. This listing will be updated weekly on Saturday afternoon and is available on the message line at 329-2141.

  • Crafters may not consign their own crafts due to the nonprofit status of the shop.

  • Consignors who are discourteous or rude will be referred to Management. Such continued behavior will not be tolerated and may result in loss of shopping and/or consignment privileges.

  • Consignors, volunteers and staff may not pull or remove other consignor’s items from the sales floor under any circumstance.

  • The Fort Leonard Wood Thrift Shop is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items. Unidentified items will be placed in the lost and found for 45 days.
